Anonymous » How do you guys feel about #asianinvasion in May? Should we shut it down?

takingbackourculture:

Can other POC please fucking stop stealing ideas from black people? Seriously?

We have Asian Face Appreciation day at the beginning of every month with Angry Asian Girls United (which if I recall correctly, also accepts anyone who is Asian for that, not just Asian women).

This is not solidarity. This is BARELY better than “whiteout”. This is other POC, who are not black perpetuating anti-blackness and taking black people’s oppression and making it about US.

It is not about us.

Yes, we do not match Eurocentric standards. This does not mean we take a movement specifically for black peoples to empower themselves and make it about us. And also, there are black Asians.

I don’t get why we would need an “Asian invasion” in May when we already have something dedicated to that. Seriously blackout has barely ended why do we have to make everything about us?

In addition, our own blog has WOC Wednesday, and we’ve talked about bringing back MOC Monday and NB Tuesday which were removed because lack of submissions. There are also plenty of other movements like “reclaim the Latina tag”, “reclaim the native tag”, and “reclaim the Asian tag”which focus on trying to reclaim Asian/Latinx/Native bodies and identities. Why do we have to feel like whenever black people empower themselves inherently feels like we are left out/disempowered by it?

I think we, especially given our own histories of anti-blackness, really need to take a step back and stop centralizing everything around us. I probably wouldn’t have had an issue with this if it hadn’t directly sprung out of blackout, but it did. POC is a solidarity term, not a monolithic identity, don’t forget that.
